Environmental Pollution and Remediation

The unit is charged with the responsibility of carrying out avant-garde research and development in the area of environmental pollution associated with renewable energy activities, proffering mitigating/remedial measures and disseminating such findings to all stakeholders and policy makers in the environmental sector.

The specific functions of the unit takes its root from the Centre's mandate  and are as follows:

  • carrying out survey and documentation of activities (anthropogenic and natural) that degrade and affect the environment adversely; focusing on the immediate environs of the Centre, south-south geopolitical zone and Nigeria.
  • To take the lead in the sensitization of our immediate society and Nigeria on environmental management and sustainability through journal publications, workshops and seminars.
  • To research into alternative technologies for sustainable environmental problems associated with renewable energy activities.

The research focus of the Environmental Pollution and Remediation unit are:

  • Survey and documentation of anthropogenic and natural activities that degrade and affect the environment adversely.
  • Employ engineering principles to remediate environmental challenges.
  • Develop processes for sustainable water resources management.

Currently, we are focused on the improvement of the existing Bioethanol distillation Unit.

The Environmental Pollution and Remediation team have successfully fabricated a 100 litre ethanol distillation unit and deployed it to produce ethanol from Paw-paw waste, Pineapple waste, Palm wine and Plantain waste. The utilization of this crop residues to produce ethanol which are abundant and otherwise wasted and constitute an environmental eye sore have been addressed.
