In an effort to fulfill her Mandate, the National Centre for Energy and Environment (Energy Commission of Nigeria), University of Benin has organized a two day workshop to showcase the Centre's Research findings. The workshop with the theme “Dissemination of Research Findings in Renewable Energy Deployment and Sustainable Environmental Management Best Practices”, was held on the 24th and 25th of August, 2011, at the Faculty of Engineering Board Room, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, Edo State.
The workshop covered research findings in Environmental Documentation, Biogas Production, Waste to Energy, Solar Energy, Water Quality, Air Quality, Fingerprinting and Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensic carried out by the Centre in the last two years.
The Director of the Centre, Professor Lawrence I.N. Ezemonye, noted that the workshop will provide a platform for the Centre's Thematic Research Groups to present their research findings and activities for subsequent development, commercialization and deployment. He explained that research findings at various Research Centres in the Country would be meaningless if they are not made public and beneficial to the society. According to him, research is part of efforts to enhance decision-making on energy policies and environment sustainability at National level.
The workshop attracted over 140 participants from Government Establishments, Research Institutes/Agencies, Academia, Private Sectors, NGOs , Farmer groups, Professional Associations and the Media. Other special guests at the event include the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. O.G. Oshodin(JP) who was the Chairman at the opening ceremony, the Director-General/CEO Energy Commission of Nigeria and Senior Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Prof. A.S. Sambo, represented by the Director of Research of the Commission, Mr. Ayo Omowumi, the Director of Environment, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel, Dr. (Mrs) B.I. Ekeh, Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, represented by Mr. Alakha and Principal Officers of the University of Benin.
